$8.72 Million jury verdict after botched laparoscopy surgery

A 26 year-old woman agreed to an exploratory laparoscopy to find the cause of her abdominal pain. The surgery was performed by a resident, who lacerated the woman’s right common iliac artery and vein. The woman lost almost 8,000 cc of blood, underwent emergency surgery, and required care at a rehabilitation facility. She now suffers from adhesions that cause chronic pain and place her at risk of a bowel obstruction. The jury award did not include an amount for lost income (which was not claimed).
